Texas' Return to Success and the Problematic CFP

Per: Sports Illustrated

The Texas Longhorns and Steve Sarkisian began their season with a goal, "Have 5 stars with five star culture", Sarkisian quotes following win against Iowa State. Texas has made an incredible return to the top since the loss in 2010 versus the Alabama Crimson Tide. Texas came back swinging this year and got their revenge on the Crimson Tide this year following the unfortunate loss to Alabama the year prior. Texas has seen major jumps this year including standout running back Jonathan Brooks who unfortunately tore his ACL, quarterback Quinn Ewers and defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat. Texas has returned to the top and was then searching for a spot in the College Football Playoff. As conference championships turned around the corner, the committee was in for a treat. This meant it was down to really

8. Alabama

7.Texas

6. Ohio State

5. Oregon

4. Florida State

3. Washington

2.Michigan

1.Georgia

After the power five championships were finished the committee had a tough decision to make. #1 Georgia had lost to #8 Alabama and #5 Oregon had lost to #3 Washington. This meant there were 4 slots for about 6 teams. Michigan was seeming a lock as well as Washington, but the question remained who will be in the #3 and #4 slots. Texas was the favorite of the 6 to have spot as they seemingly had a dominate season despite the one loss to Oklahoma. The question was seemingly Alabama or Florida State. The case for both teams were significant, but most believe it came to one detail in the subtext. The committee has a clause in which, "loss of key players" was a factor in their voting process. Alabama had a great season and just one loss to Texas and beat the #1 seed and impressed everyone significantly, however the Florida State Seminole's were on top. They had more wins and they had 0 losses. The problem here was that starting quarterback for the Seminole's, Jordan Travis was out for the season after suffering a brutal injury against North Alabama. This cause was seemingly enough evidence to give the 4 spot to the Alabama Crimson Tide and the playoff was set.
